The exercise begins by having snares and tenors drop sticks in metered time and letting them bounce, instilling a sense of looseness and relaxation in the arms and hands. The transfer of this loose feeling into double strokes and then single strokes helps to remove any muscle tension in the body. The exercise continues to include single, double, triple and quadruple strokes, flams, diddles, and good emphasis on accents that help to loosen up the wrists and forearms. The tenor part is written to exercise sweeps and crossovers, and the bass part is written to be fairly easy to memorize, unlike most bass parts in warm-ups. After all, the idea of a warm-up is to warm up the percussion section, not to provide needless memorization! There are mallet parts written for Bells, Xylophone, Vibraphone and Marimba, but these parts can easily be adapted to just play the Marimba and Xylophone parts depending on whether the player is a 2- or 4-mallet player. It helped my Countertenor voice align well with going from him to low notes, allowing my voice to sound more fluid and less detached from register to register and mixed voice . Listed are the Basic Warmups that I have gone over in this video: A) The warm-up "massage" 1) Yawn-sigh 2) Siren B) Separation and Blending of Registers 1) Cuperto ([u] octaves) You can use whatever vowel feels comfortable for you 2) Alleluia (arpeggio) on the key of C Major: C, E, G, C, G, E , C or do-mi-sol-do-sol-mi-do C) Coordinating Vocalises 1) Ning-ah 2) Ying, Yang, Yoong D) Advanced Exercises 1) 5 note scale on [i] in lower register and [u] in upper register. The [u] vowel for males is a great vowel to work with for higher notes, especially for baritone or countertenor voices. It allows the tongue to rest nicely without pushing down on the larynx or shoving up on the throat. When hitting high notes, your larynx should rest low and not shove up. If not, this will create problems and hurt your voice in the long run. It also tires out your voice much faster. Use a mirror to check to see if your larynx is in the low position, it should feel natural and not pushed. Also, use the mirror to check if your jaw is stable, with lips mostly moving for ...
