Nebraska Cornhuskers......[5-3] #24 Oklahoma Sooners......[5-3] November 7th, 2009 Memorial Stadium Lincoln, NE No matter how ugly, a victory against Oklahoma is always special for Nebraska. Just ask Cornhuskers coach Bo Pelini. "I've had some great ones, but this ranks right up there," Nebraska's second-year coach said. Matt O'Hanlon had three of the Huskers' five interceptions against Landry Jones, and they squeezed enough production out of their struggling offense to beat Oklahoma (No. 24 BCS, No. 20 AP) 10-3 on Saturday night. Nebraska snapped a four-game losing streak against its longtime rival. "That game could have gone a lot of different ways, and we just found a way to hang in there and hang in there, and we made enough plays to win the football game," Pelini said. The Sooners (5-4, 3-2 Big 12) failed to score a touchdown for the first time since a 29-0 loss to Texas A&M in 1998. The Sooners had 325 total yards, but they moved inside the Nebraska 20 just once, turned over the ball three times on downs, missed two field goals and had another one blocked. Then there were those interceptions. Nebraska picked off five passes in a game for the first time since 2003 against Texas A&M, and O'Hanlon became the first Huskers player since 1979 to intercept three. "They made the plays they needed to win the game," OU coach Bob Stoops said. "It would have been hard for our defense to play much better. Offensively, we moved the ball quite frequently, but we couldn't produce ...

Nebraska Cornhuskers....[6-3] Kansas Jayhawks..............[5-4] November 14th, 2009 Memorial Stadium Lawrence, KS First play of the game, Niles Paul noticed the cornerback was playing up, so he took off up the sideline. Zac Lee saw Paul's read, floated the ball just over the defender's shoulder, right into his receiver's hands for a 35-yard gain. That conservative Nebraska offense, the one that drew so much criticism last week against Oklahoma? Out the window. The Big 12 North title within their grasp, the Cornhuskers aren't holding back any longer. Roy Helu Jr. ran for 156 yards and three touchdowns, and Nebraska dusted off its big-play offense to beat Kansas 31-17 Saturday for a share of the Big 12 North lead. "The thing we wanted to say is: We've got our mojo back," Nebraska offensive coordinator Shawn Watson said. Chastised for playing close to the vest in last week's 10-3 win over Oklahoma, the Cornhuskers (7-3, 4-2) hit Kansas with a barrage of big plays to win in Lawrence for the first time since 2001. Paul took advantage of single coverage, setting the tone with his opening catch and adding three more to finish with 154 yards. He had 244 total yards, including a crucial 44-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter to set up the go-ahead score shortly after Kansas had taken the lead. Helu recovered a fumble in the end zone in the first quarter, scored on runs of 20 and 14 yards in the fourth. Lee was an efficient 13 for 21 for 196 yards in his first start in three ...

Nebraska Cornhuskers....[7-3] Kansas State Wildcats.....[6-5] November 21st, 2009 Memorial Stadium Lincoln, NE A month ago, in the wake of back-to-back home losses, Nebraska's season looked to be going south. Now the Huskers will be happily heading south to the Big 12 championship game in Arlington, Texas, after Saturday night's 17-3 victory over Kansas State. The Huskers (8-3, 5-2) clinched the North Division with their fourth straight win and will play South champion Texas on Dec. 5 for the conference title and a BCS bowl bid. "We've steadily improved and we've hung together," Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said. "We were in a tough spot after the Iowa State game, and everybody wanted to write us off. There's too much character in the locker room." Nebraska will go to the Big 12 title game for the first time since 2006 and fifth time in the league's 14 years. First, though, the Huskers travel to Colorado to finish the regular season Friday. "There's not going to be any patting ourselves on the back," Pelini said. "That's for another time. We enjoy this win tonight and then get back to work." Roy Helu Jr. ran 26 times for 95 yards and a touchdown and went over 1000 yards for the season, and Zac Lee completed 13 of 19 passes for 166 yards and a score. Nebraska's defense did the rest, holding Kansas State scoreless after the game's opening series. The Wildcats (6-6, 4-4), who would have won the North with a win, ended their season with losses in three of their last four games ...

#25 Nebraska Cornhuskers..................[2-1] Louisiana-Lafayette Rajin' Cajuns........[2-1] September 26th, 2009 Memorial Stadium Lincoln, NE The party at Memorial Stadium turned into quite a blowout. Nebraska wore throwback jerseys and honored members of its 1962 team Saturday night in celebration of its 300th consecutive sellout. The Cornhuskers' 55-0 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette was almost a sideshow. Zac Lee passed for 238 yards and a touchdown, Roy Helu Jr. scored twice and the Huskers beat up on an opponent from the Sun Belt Conference for the third time one week after a devastating 16-15 loss at Virginia Tech. "Now the season starts. Right now. That's the way we look at it," coach Bo Pelini said. "Time to put the foot on the gas pedal and go. We have a long season and challenges in front of us." The Huskers (3-1) certainly weren't challenged in the games they've won. They beat Florida Atlantic, Arkansas State and Lafayette by a combined 142-12. Now the Big 12 North favorites get a week off before opening conference play at Missouri on Oct. 8. Nebraska scored on its first five possessions against the Ragin' Cajuns (2-2) before Larry Asante ran back an interception 74 yards to make it 34-0 in the middle of the second quarter. The Ragin' Cajuns generated only 222 yards and penetrated the Nebraska 20-yard line once, losing the ball on one of their three turnovers. The Huskers' uniforms -- with script numbers on the jerseys and numbers rather than the traditional ...

#15 Nebraska Cornhuskers......[4-1] Texas Tech Red Raiders............[4-2] October 17th, 2009 Memorial Stadium Lincoln, NE Texas Tech took a break from its win-with-offense style. The Red Raiders' 31-10 upset of No. 15 Nebraska clearly belonged to the defense. Steven Sheffield passed for a touchdown and ran for two in his first road start, but the offense went dormant for long stretches of the second half, and the defense never let Nebraska back in the game. "We were losing yards as fast as we were gaining them there for a while," Tech coach Mike Leach said. "We tested them in about every way that we could. Bad field position. The offense goes three-and-out and then three-and-out. It was like, 'What are you going to do about this, defense?' They just kept stepping up." Texas Tech (5-2, 2-1 Big 12) won for the first time in four road games since last October. The Raiders came to Lincoln with the nation's second-ranked offense, but they managed just 259 yards -- 263 under their average -- and mustered only 47 in the second half. Still, the effort was good enough, largely because of a defense that held Nebraska (4-2, 1-1) to 285 yards and the Huskers' lowest point total since a 41-6 loss to Missouri in 2007. The loss further exposed Nebraska's offensive shortcomings against quality defenses. For the second straight week Zac Lee and the Huskers did next to nothing for three quarters. Last week they were able to rally for four touchdowns in the fourth and beat Missouri 27-12 ...

Nebraska Cornhuskers....[4-3] Baylor Bears........................[3-4] October 31st, 2009 Floyd Casey Stadium Waco, TX Freshman Cody Green led Nebraska to points on its first three drives in his first college start as the Cornhuskers ended a two-game losing streak, beating Baylor 20-10 on Saturday. Justin Blatchford returned a blocked punt for a touchdown, Dontrayevous Robinson added a rushing score and Jared Crick had a school record of five sacks to help Nebraska (5-3, 2-2 Big 12) beat Baylor (3-5, 0-4) for the 10th-straight time. Green, a Texas high school star from a town about 200 miles southeast of Waco, was 12 of 21 for 128 yards passing to stake Nebraska to a 20-0 lead. The Huskers had scored a just 17 combined points in recent home losses to Texas Tech and Iowa State, and they matched a school record with eight turnovers against the latter. Baylor lost its fourth in a row and hasn't beaten Nebraska since 1956. Clifton Odom returned an interception for a touchdown in the third quarter to bring the Bears within 10. Nebraska coach Bo Pelini promised personnel changes earlier this week after watching his offense sputter in consecutive lackluster performances. The biggest move came at quarterback, where junior Zac Lee had started the first seven games of the season. Green got a hand from the Huskers' special teams before he even took the field. Eric Martin came up the middle and blocked Derek Epperson's punt on the first series of the game. Blatchford scooped up the ...

Nebraska Cornhuskers....[4-2] Iowa State Cyclones..........[4-3] October 24th, 2009 Memorial Stadium Lincoln, NE Nebraska all but gift-wrapped this one. And first-year coach Paul Rhoads and his upstart Cyclones will gladly take it. The Cornhuskers matched a school record by committing eight turnovers, including four inside the Iowa State 5, and the Cyclones posted a 9-7 upset Saturday for their first victory in Lincoln since 1977. "I feel really blessed to get this win, and I know that's the way the rest of the team feels," defensive tackle Nate Frere said. "Wacky game, but that's how it goes sometimes." Wacky, indeed. Iowa State was without its top two offensive playmakers because of injury, and other players were physically ill before the game and during halftime because of a stomach bug. The 18½-point-underdog Cyclones (5-3, 2-2) ended a 15-game Big 12 losing streak in games played away from Ames, Iowa, and now have their most wins since going 7-5 in 2005. They need just one more win to become bowl eligible. After close losses to Kansas State and Kansas, the Cyclones have beaten Baylor and Nebraska (4-3, 1-2) in consecutive weeks and become a factor in the Big 12 North. "When you don't win in a stadium on the road since 1977, it's big," Rhoads said. "This is a program that has as much tradition as anybody in college football. This is a program that was in the Top 25 a week ago. It's a big win." Before Saturday, Nebraska had won 126 straight games in which it held the ...

#21 Nebraska Cornhuskers......[3-1] #24 Missouri Tigers.....................[4-0] October 8th, 2009 Faurot Field Columbia, MO Facing a double-digit road deficit after three quarters on a cold and rainy night, No. 21 Nebraska could have packed it in. Instead, the offense that had been anemic took advantage of two big interceptions to help spur a 20-point scoring flurry over a little more than 3 minutes early in the fourth quarter, leading to a 27-12 victory over No. 24 Missouri on Thursday. Zac Lee threw three TD passes in the decisive fourth quarter for Nebraska (4-1, 1-0 Big 12), outplaying counterpart Blaine Gabbert. The Missouri quarterback entered the game ranked fourth nationally in passing efficiency and leading the Big 12. "I was digging deep from the beginning," Lee said. "It just didn't show up until the end." Missouri built a 12-0 lead after three quarters, its lone touchdown coming on Gabbert's 1-yard sneak on fourth down with 2 seconds remaining in the first half. But Nebraska rallied with three touchdowns in a 3:22 span early in fourth quarter. Lee hit Niles Paul with a 56-yard scoring pass to cut the lead to 12-7. On Missouri's next offensive play, Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh deflected and then intercepted a Gabbert pass. The Huskers scored quickly on a 13-yard pass from Lee to Paul to make it 13-12. A 2-point conversion attempt failed. A 40-yard interception return by Nebraska's Dejon Gomes on Missouri's next possession left the ball on ...

Nebraska Cornhuskers...[8-3] Colorado Buffaloes...........[3-8] November 27th, 2009 Folsom Field Boulder, CO This is why Bo Pelini didn't want his team even thinking about Texas until next week. With the Big 12 North title already wrapped up, he forbade the Nebraska Cornhuskers from so much as mentioning the Longhorns, who they'll face in the conference championship next Saturday. Sure enough, the Colorado Buffaloes gave Nebraska all it could handle before the Huskers left Folsom Field with a sloppy 28-20 win Friday. Nebraska had just as tough a tuneup for the Big 12 championship game as the third-ranked Longhorns did one day earlier when they beat Texas A&M 49-39 to keep their national championship hopes alive. "I thought we took a step back today," Pelini said after the Cornhuskers (9-3, 6-2) struggled on offense and only pulled this one out because of touchdowns on a punt return and an interception. "It was a very average effort," agreed Nebraska nose tackle Ndamukong Suh. "I think we were playing hard but there were aspects of the game where we definitely made a lot of mistakes. We shouldn't allow that. It was just a collective game of small plays where we were right there to make the play and we didn't do it." The Buffaloes (3-9, 2-6) put up a good fight one day after learning their embattled coach would return next season. Dan Hawkins is 16-33 with four losing seasons, a 2-20 road record and a 10-22 mark in conference play since bolting Boise State in 2006 to clean ...

#19 Nebraska Cornhuskers......[2-0] #13 Virginia Tech Hokies............[1-1] September 19th, 2009 Lane Stadium Blacksburg, VA With pressure coming and Virginia Tech desperate, Tyrod Taylor's eyes worked quickly from the left side of the field to the right, just fast enough. "That's kind of what you play for, moments like that," he said. But Taylor wasn't finished. Not by a long shot. After being sacked on the first play from the 3 for an 8-yard loss and then rushed into throwing the ball away, Taylor scrambled around for what the school said was nine seconds before rifling the ball to Roberts on the right side of the end zone with 21 seconds left. "I redeemed myself," said Roberts, who had dropped a third-down pass earlier. "Every kid that plays football dreams of a game like this," he added. Especially when you come out on top. "That's the game," cornerback Rashad Carmichael said. "Sometimes you've got to pull something out of some body part." Carmichael was on the bench listening to defensive coordinator Bud Foster talk about how the Hokies were going to score when he saw the ball floating toward Coale only feet away. "Great ball. Great catch," he said. And a great win for the Hokies (2-1), who had struggled all day against the Nebraska defense, managing just 195 yards in the first three quarters and only one real scoring drive. Their touchdown came on the game's opening series, a 24-yard drive set up by Roberts' 76-yard return of the opening kickoff, and their second ...
